Expression of two variant surface glycoproteins on individual African trypanosomes during antigen switching

To detect antigen switching events in Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, monoclonal antibodies specific for preswitch MVAT's (metacyclic-variant antigen types) and postswitch BVATs (blood-stage VATs) were used in immunofluorescence analysis of blood-stage trypanosomes. Individual organisms were observed in the process of switching. During the switch the trypanosomes simultaneously expressed both pre- and postswitch variant surface glycoproteins uniformly over their surface.
