5000-6000 msuperscript 3 water/ha was necessary to produce 35-45 t tubers/ha for consumption in autumn/winter (between 1st April and 30th Sept.). Under non-irrigated conditions with mean annual precipitation of 3800 msuperscript 3/ha, mean yields of 31.2 t/ha were obtained compared with 47.5 t/ha obtained when irrigated with 5150 msuperscript 3/ha. Over 6 localities, irrigation resulted in a mean yield increase of 16.3 t/ha, with increases ranging from 6 to 26 t/ha.
