Since 1973/74 various practical experiments on model procedures for part time extensive livestock farming have been carried out in hill areas of the GFR. They aim to provide information for policy decision making and to test whether this type of extensive farming can be economically viable. The production systems involved include various sizes of sheep farming, breeding and nurse cows, and heifer feeding enterprises.
