External effects of nitrogen fertilization. Problems of estimating them and approaches to reducing them from an economic and ecological point of view

External effects of nitrogen fertilization. Problems of estimating them and approaches to reducing them from an economic and ecological point of view

Landwirtschaft und Umwelt (1): 234

The study first examines the external effects of nitrogen fertilizers and discusses how they can be measured and costed. The major effect is pollution of groundwater, especially when this is the drinking water supply. An optimal level of fertilization is estimated to be reached when the cost of reducing the nitrogen content of drinking water is greater than the net benefits from using additional nitrogen fertilizers.
