External parasites of swine

The external parasites of swine of economic significance include mites, lice, fleas and mosquitoes, but by far the most important is the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis the causal agent of sarcoptic mange. The life cycle is briefly described, and details are given of the clinical signs of infestation and the changes that occur in the skin of heavily infested pigs. Diagnosis, methods of control and prevention of infestation are more fully discussed.
