Feeding rate of larval clover root curculio, Sitona hispidulus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), on alfalfa taproots

Feeding rate of larval clover root curculio, Sitona hispidulus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), on alfalfa taproots

Journal of Economic Entomology, 792: 506-510

Larvae of Sitona hispidulus were sampled on lucerne in field studies in Kentucky in 1983. The relationship between larva-days (a measure of larval density over time) and the amount of taproot damaged by the larvae was determined. Damage was caused to taproots of lucerne by 4th- and 5th-instar larvae of at rates of 13.03 and 4.35 mmsuperscript 2/larva per day, respectively; 2nd- and 3rd-instar larvae did not contribute significantly to taproot damage.
