Field trials on oral immunization of weaner piglets against Escherichia coli diarrhoea

Field trials on oral immunization of weaner piglets against Escherichia coli diarrhoea

Tierarztliche Umschau 41(11): 804-806, 809-812

An inactivated polyvalent E. coli vaccine containing antigens of the O groups 8, 138, 141 and 149 was administered in drinking water to piglets on 5 problem farms. Morbidity and mortality were reduced significantly only on 2 farms. On these farms the enterotoxigenic strain O149 was isolated, while on the other 3 the field strains were not the same as in the vaccine. Overall, morbidity was reduced from 70.8% to 66.1%, but mortality increased from 2.43% in controls to 4.3% in vaccinated piglets.
