Data on 1265 lactations of 555 daughters of 103 sires in a Holstein-Friesian herd between 1971 and 1981 were analysed. Estimates of hsuperscript 2 from the paternal half-sib correlations were as follows: milk yield, 0.32; av. loge somatic cell count of milk, 0.17; percentage of "months with mastitis", 0.22; mastitis (recorded as a binary variable), 0.07; discarded milk, 0.16; total cost of mastitis, 0.19.
