Dark-grown seedlings of Alaska (LeLe, tall) and Progress 9 (lele, dwarf) were similar with respect to the lengths of the first 3 internodes, confirming previous reports that Progress 9 has a tall phenotype in the dark. Dark-grown seedlings of both cultivars and red-light-grown seedlings of Alaska (but not Progress 9) responded to applied gibberellin GA20 (normally inactive in LeLe genotypes). Gibberellin GA1 was active in both cultivars, in both darkness and red light.
