In vitro survival of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices in several media, at +4 degrees C and +37 degrees C

In vitro survival of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices in several media, at +4 degrees C and +37 degrees C

Zeitschrift für Parasitenkunde 72(2): 273-278

E. granulosus protoscolices from liver and lung hydatids from sheep and horses slaughtered in Spain were maintained in vitro in various media at either 4 or 37 degrees C. Higher percentage survival was obtained than previously reported: at 4 degrees C, there was 100% survival for 20 days in medium 199 (GIBCO) and for 25 days in hydatid fluid from the host. Maximal survival was 30% at 55 days in these conditions. Flame cell activity was the chosen criterion for viability.
