Institutionalizing farming systems research: the case of farming systems research in Northern Nigeria

Institutionalizing farming systems research: the case of farming systems research in Northern Nigeria

Farming Systems Research Paper Series, Kansas State University (9): 98-109

The paper first outlines the characteristics of farming systems research (FSR), and then reviews the adoption of this approach in Northern Nigeria. FSR refocuses research on the small farm and develops integrated sets of technologies relevant to the farmer's situation. Four distinguishable stages are relevant for the implementation of an effective FSR programme in a developing country: diagnostic research, on-station research, on-farm research, and mass adoption activities.
