Investigation of cryogenic damage of spermatozoa using electron-paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of membrane spin labels

The role of sperm membranes, in particular the arrangement of lipid molecules, in the protection of spermatozoa against the effects of deep freezing was studied. Bull spermatozoa exhibited a significantly greater resistance to freezing than boar spermatozoa, the ratio of sperm head area after freezing to that before freezing being 0.977 for bull spermatozoa and 0.914 for boar spermatozoa, and the corresponding ratios for the acrosome being 0.997 and 0.797.
