Iron toxicity - influence of P, K, Ca and Mg application on rhizoflora, redox potential and iron uptake by different rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties

Iron toxicity - influence of P, K, Ca and Mg application on rhizoflora, redox potential and iron uptake by different rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties

Landwirtschaftliche Forschung 36(3/4): 285-299

In pot experiments, rice IR 22 (susceptible to Fe toxicity) and IR 42 (Fe tolerant) were treated to eliminate Zn deficiency and transplanted into a typical infertile Fe-toxic soil (pH 4.7) or a fertile clay soil (pH 6.6) without or with N added alone or combined with P, K and Ca + Mg. Added nutrients, especially Ca + Mg, increased plant growth and decreased Fe uptake in both cv., with greater effect in IR 22 than in IR 42, and dehydrogenase activity and Fe 2+ formation in the rhizosphere.
