Is selection on quantitative characters between F3 lines in small grains feasible?

Efficiency in plant breeding Proceedings of the 10th Congress of the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding, EUCARPIA, Wageningen, the Netherlands, 19-24 June 1983: 87-89
Is selection on quantitative characters between F3 lines in small grains feasible?
It is pointed out that in wheat and barley low grain yield/plant limits yield experiments on F2-derived F3 lines, at sowing densities commonly used in western Europe, to plots 1-1.5 msuperscript 2 in area and without replicates; in this situation variation due to error (including genotype X environment and genotype X year interactions) is high.
