Isolation of Brucella melitensis from sheep in Syria

Isolation of Brucella melitensis from sheep in Syria

Veterinary Record 117(11): 277-277

Two isolates, recovered in 1981 from aborted fetuses in two flocks of the local Awassi sheep, one of about 200 ewes near Damascus and the other of about 500 ewes at Sweida (100 miles south of Damascus), were identified as biovar 1 and biovar 2, respectively. In each flock the abortions occurred as short, sharp "storms" involving about 20 ewes in the third month of pregnancy.
