Keshan disease: an endemic selenium-related deficiency disease
A technical paper presents data on the association of selenium (Se) deficiency with endemic cardiomyopathy (Keshan disease (KD)) in China, including: Se levels in soil, foodstuffs, blood, and hair; population susceptibility; seasonal variations; Se deficiency prevention; etiological factors; the high correlation between KD prevalence and low Se levels in rice; demographic risks; and the daily human intake of Se.
