Massive outbreak of Lymantria monacha in Poland in 1978-84

Spread of the population in Scots pine, Norway spruce and mixed stands in northern Poland increased from 20 000 ha in 1978 to 245 000 ha in 1979, 600 000 ha in 1980, 1 800 000 ha in 1981 and a max. of 2 200 000 ha in 1982. The affected area fell to 1 400 000 ha in 1983 and 180 000 in 1984. No natural control method proved to be effective and therefore chemical control was used to save stands.
