From approx. 1 yr of age, 32 Friesian calves were (1) left entire, kept on pasture from 23 Mar. until 5 July, and slaughtered at 450 kg, (2) left entire, kept on pasture, but fed 5 kg concentrates during 25 days prior to slaughter, (3) left entire, kept on pasture until it was exhausted and then fed 3 kg concentrates daily until slaughter at 550 kg, or (4) castrated and kept on pasture until slaughter at 450 kg. All animals were kept indoors from 13 Dec. to 23 Mar.
