Milk production contributed almost 20% of the final product of EC(9) agriculture in 1983, about 31% (1.621 million) of farmers kept about 25.511 million dairy cows producing some 110 873 Mt of milk, about 84% of which was delivered to dairies and which represented a self sufficiency level for the Community as a whole in 1982 of 128% for milk fats and of 120% for milk proteins.
