Nitrogen use for intensive dairy farming

Nitrogen use for intensive dairy farming

Farm and Food Research 14(3): 73-75

Trials at Moorepark demonstrated the use of extra N to advance and extend the grazing season. In grazing studies, N at 490 kg/ha did not increase the milk yield of cows stocked at 2.7 or 3.4/ha compared with cows stocked at 2.5 and 3.1/ha resp. on grass given N at the recommended 270 kg/ha. The higher level of N only improved milk yield and profit/ha through the higher stocking rate.
