Outbreak and latency populations of nun moth, Lymantria monacha L

Outbreak and latency populations of nun moth, Lymantria monacha L

Mitteilungen der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Allgemeine und Angewandte Entomologie 4(4/6): 240-243

Estimations of population density of Lymantria monacha in spruce forests (Picea abies) in Denmark indicated larval population densities of 0-4500/ha during the latency phase, whereas in an outbreak, population densities reached 20 000-30 000 larvae/tree, corresponding to 16-24 million larvae/ha. In latency populations, there were only 20-100 adult males/ha. Typically, outbreaks occurred in years following 2 warm dry summers during which spruce trees showed extremely low growth rates.
