In a study using four heifers and four cows, exposure of intact skin or conjunctiva to a high dose of Aujeszky virus (isolated from the brain stem of an ox that had died from the disease) failed to induce infection, but subcutaneous injection of as little as 50 TCID50 (about 35 infective viral particles) caused infection after a 119-hour incubation period.
