Pathways to safety
A series of preference tests were carried out with >40 piglets allowed to choose which surface they preferred. The apparatus used consisted of 8 rubber sacs partially filled with thermostatically heated water and softness controlled by the volume of water contained in the sacs. Piglets were placed in the centre of the apparatus for 12 mins immediately after birth and their behaviour and responses recorded.
