Patterns of glycosaminoglycans excretions in the urine of Egyptians differing in their vitamin A status

A study of the vitamin A status of 52 Egyptian boys (ages 6-12 years) from a low socioeconomic class revealed that 24 (46 per cent) had deficient plasma retinol levels. It was found that vitamin A deficiency was associated with diminished urinary excretions of gylcosaminoglycans (GAG), confirming that a vitamin A deficiency results in a reduction of GAG synthesis. Electrophoretic analysis of GAG revealed it to be mostly composed of chondroitin sulfate (90 per cent) and heparan sulfate (9.5 per cent), with traces of hyaluronic acid (less than 1 per cent). It is concluded that vitamin A plays some role in the synthesis of glycoproteins and that vitamin A deficiency results in reduced in vivo glycoprotein biosynthesis.(wz)
