Performance of tropical pasture legumes grown in south-western islands of Japan. V. Effect of sowing time on the establishment of tropical legume pastures

Percentage germination and ground cover of 4 tropical legume spp. sown monthly in Okinawa in Jan.-Dec. 1980 were measured 30 and 60 days after sowing. Most suitable sowing dates were June-Oct., April-June, April-June and Oct., and Feb.-June and Oct. for Macroptilium atropurpureum Siratro, Glycine wightii Cooper, Stylosanthes guianensis Endeavour and Stizolobium hassjoo resp. Sowing in July-Sept. was not recommended due to risks of drought and typhoons.
