Physiological causes of differences in yield between tall and dwarf varieties of winter wheat

The semidwarf variety Hobbit outyielded Splendeur and Maris Huntsman, which are both tall, though the total dry matter production of all three varieties was similar. Hobbit tillered more freely than either of the others and produced more ears than Maris Huntsman. It also had more grains/spikelet and grains/ear than either of the tall varieties.
