Production functions have been used as an analytical tool for investigations in many branches of Brazilian agriculture; research is cited. The present paper demonstrates, however, that the method used by these researchers is not appropriate for economic analysis. It then goes on to demonstrate that the estimation of production functions from survey data does not permit estimates to be made which are sufficiently precise for them to have any practical value.
