Properties of different isolates of Rhizobium trifolii in relation to their nitrogen fixing ability in Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum). I. Growth behaviour, reduction in pH and polysaccharide production

Fourteen isolates of Rhizobium trifolii from different locations of Nainital Tarai were studied for growth behaviour, change in pH of growth medium and production of extracellular polysaccharide from glucose, mannitol and sucrose carbon sources. Cell population at the end of 92 hours of growth in yeast extract mannitol medium was found to be correlated with the efficiency of nitrogen fixation by inoculated Trifolium alexandrinum.
