Protein and grain yield inheritance in four populations of hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Analysis of data from the F1-F5 of 4 crosses involving 4 high-protein and 2 moderately low-protein cultivars revealed that frequencies for grain protein content, grain yield, number of grains/plant, 100-grain weight, number of spikes/plant and number of grains/spike had normal distribution curves, suggesting quantitative inheritance of these traits. Heritability estimates, which were generally low and variable between generations, were higher for grain protein content than for grain yield.
