In 9 experiments, wheat sowing density was increased without risk of lodging if 920 g chlormequat chloride + 640 g choline chloride were applied at stage 5 of the crop; the appropriate N fertilizer rate had no harmful effect. There was a significant increase in heading, ear density and yield. In 12 trials, a supplementary application 10 days after the 1st treatment was beneficial, particularly in a cold wet spring.
