Relationships between larval density, adult size and egg production in the cowpea seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus

Strains of Callosobruchus maculatus from Brazil and Nigeria could produce more than 12 adults from a cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) seed bearing numerous eggs, whereas a strain from the Yemen Arab Republic rarely produced more than 3. In all 3 strains, the mean weight of the adults produced from a single cowpea seed declined with increasing initial larval density in the seed. Egg production by females was positively correlated with their weight at the time of mating, shortly after emergence.
