Variations in stomatal diffusive conductance (gs), net photosynthetic rate (PN), and water use efficiency (WUE) in chamber-grown hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides x trichocarpa) were determined under differing irradiances (I) and for leaves of various ages. An unusual bimodal pattern of gs was observed both in the light and dark as a function of leaf age. However, relatively typical "rise and fall" aging patterns were observed for PN, WUE, and range of gs.
