Relative efficacy of some synthetic pyrethroids and other commonly used insecticides against bollworms and their residues in cotton

Relative efficacy of some synthetic pyrethroids and other commonly used insecticides against bollworms and their residues in cotton

International Journal of Tropical Agriculture 4(2): 168-174

Efficacy and residues of cypermethrin (60 g a. i./ha), permethrin (90 g a.i./ha) and fenvalerate (120 g a.i./ha) were studied on cotton, Gossypium hirsutum Linn., in comparison to traditional insecticides such as carbaryl, orthene and quinalphos, all applied at 300 g a.i./ha. All the insecticidal treatments were effective in controlling boll worms. Synthetic pyrethroids were significantly superior to orthene, quinalphos and carbaryl both in reducing bollworm damage and in having cotton seed yield. The rate of dissipation of synthetic pyrethroids was slower than either carbaryl or organophosphorus insecticides. At harvest, all the treatments of synthetic pyrethroid left residues both in lint and in cotton seed but these were below their prescribed maximum residue limits.
