Response of an exotic hybrid and two synthetic maize varieties to plant densities

In field trials in 1981-2, maize (a) Pioneer 514, (b) Giza 2 and (c) Cairo 1 were grown at 20 000, 25 000 and 30 000 plants/feddan and sampled 5 times at 30-90 days after sowing. Leaf area and DW/plant and LAI were in the order (c) > (b) > (a) at most growth stages, but NAR and RGR were generally in a reverse order when significantly different.
