Role of bamboo (Dendrocalamus hamiltonii Nees & Arn.) in conservation of potassium during slash and burn agriculture (jhum) in north-eastern India

Vegetation analysis, studies on biomass and litter fall, and plant and soil analyses were carried out in fallows aged 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 yr after cropping was abandoned at a site in the Khasi Hills, Meghalaya. Fallows of 10-20 yr old were dominated by D. hamiltonii and some dicotyledonous tree species. The bamboo species was shown to act as an accumulator of potassium, which declined in the soil in the first few years after slash and burn agriculture and improved in 15-20 yr old fallows.
