Rooting depth was studied during 5 years throughout the development of winter barley, winter rye and winter wheat. Rooting depths between Nov. and early May increased from 25 to 80 cm for barley and rye, and from 10 to 70 cm for wheat. Shallower rooting of wheat compared with rye and barley was related to slower shoot development as indicated by Feekes' growth stages (GS).
