Five susceptible varieties were sown early and late in each of 3 seasons and half the plots were sprayed with fungicide to control P. pachyrhizi. In unsprayed treatments, rust infection occured late in 2 seasons but reduced yield only in 1 season and only in the latest variety, Fitzroy. In 2 seasons, the effects of cultivar X sowing date interactions on yield were related to the severity and timing of moisture stress.
