Rill and gully erosion on arable lands in Zimbabwe have been effectively controlled by mechanical conservation measures. However, rates of soil loss by sheet erosion of between 50 and 80 t ha-1 year-1 have been estimated. Forward projections indicate that this rate of soil loss will destroy the productive potential of large tracts of cropland within the next 30-50 years.
