After a discussion of what is meant by culture and cultural change and a review of previous studies of sociocultural effects of tourism, the study seeks to construct a model which will enable comparison of cultural change within sub-regions of a similar culture affected and not affected by tourism. The empirical studies were carried out in St. Vincent and Martinique, islands with different levels of wealth, cultural background and types of tourism, in the 1981-83 period.
