Th Coulter automatic particle counter, used in the laboratory in Florida, was a fast, accurate device for counting spermatozoa in Solenopsis spp. Queens of S. invicta had an average of 5 669 683+or-48 148 spermatozoa in the spermatheca 2 weeks after mating, and males before a nuptial flight had an average of 8 761 637 spermatozoa. The numbers of spermatozoa in males and females of S. richteri were very similar.
