Studies on the avian cryptosporidiosis: pathological & electron microscopic observation

Clinical diagnosis of cryptosporidial diarrhoea in a flock of 12 000 11-week-old breeding poultry was confirmed by examining the epithelial surface of the cloacal bursa. Light microscopy showed numerous ovoid organisms attached by fusion along the brush border of the plical epithelium. Electron microscopy showed schizonts (containing merozoites), gametocytes and trophozoites. Despite this resemblance to the coccidial life cycle, the organism was not parasitic on, or damaging to the host cell.
