Studies on the genetic polymorphism in milk proteins. II. Genetic variants of beta -casein and beta -lactoglobulin

Milk samples from 138 Holstein-Friesian cows were analysed by starch gel electrophoresis. The occurrence of beta -casein (CN) A1A1, A1A2, A2A2, A1A3, A2A3, A1B and A2B phenotypes was 34, 55, 30, 4, 7, 3 and 5 resp., and the occurrence of beta -lactoglobulin (LG) AA, AB and BB phenotypes was 25, 73 and 40. These agreed fairly well with those predicted by the Hardy-Weinberg law.
