In trials in 1977-79 on light and heavy soils in the Szczecin region of Poland, irrigation applied at different stages of growth increased yields of potatoes by up to about 45%, but when combined with 200 or 600 kg NPK/ha yield increases were much greater, particularly on the light, sandy soil. Irrigation was much more effective on light soil than on heavy soil in the unfertilized treatments, but was more effective on heavy soil with high NPK.
