Summer and winter pruning and 4 degrees of pruning severity were compared on maiden and 2-year-old trees of Golden Delicious on Graham's Seedling in 1980-82. In general the effects of summer and winter pruning differed little. With an increase in severity of pruning, however, winter frost damage was considerably increased, particularly on the older trees. Stem diameter, number of shoots and total shoot length were reduced with increasing pruning severity while mean shoot length increased.
