Triticale Lasko and MT-3 were sown on 20-25 Sept., 5-10 or 20-25 Oct. or 5-10 Nov. and given 0, 50, 100 or 150 kg N/ha. In 1982, when the winter was early and severe, the 2 earlier sowing dates gave the highest yields but in 1983-84 later sowing did not reduce and sometimes increased yields. The opt. N rate ranged from 89 kg/ha in a dry year (1983) to 140 kg in a cool wet year (1984). The higher N rate did not eliminate the unfavourable effect of delayed sowing.
