The interaction of pH (4 or 6), Al (0 or 16 ppm at pH 4) and N source (symbiotic or combined) on the growth and nutrient status of cowpea (V. unguiculata) was studied in a glasshouse experiment. Low pH significantly decreased the growth of the plants dependent on symbiotic N fixation but at pH 4 the addition of 16 ppm Al further depressed growth in both N regimes. Al ions apparently exert their effect primarily on the root system, as shown by the reduction in total length and fresh weight. the symbiotic development of the plants was affected by low pH but more markedly by the Al treatment. Shoot N concentrations were reduced from .apprx. 2.6% at pH 6 to 1.8% and 0.9% at pH 4 without and with Al, respectively. Ca concentration was decreased by low pH and further by Al in both N regimes. In all Al-treated plants, the Al was mainly accumulated in the roots and was associated with an increase in their P concentration.
