Abstract
24 Hereford X Friesian heifers with an av. live weight of 371 kg were synchronized for oestrus with 2 injections of Estrumate. 10 days after the 2nd injection they were given ear implants containing 300 mg trenbolone acetate, 36 mg zeranol or 45 mg oestradiol-17 beta , or received no further treatment (controls). During the 75-day experiment, heifers implanted with trenbolone acetate gained more weight than controls (77.6 vs. 66.5 kg; P<0.05), and had a lower increase in uterine weight (98.3 vs. 165.3 g; P<0.01). Heifers implanted with zeranol or oestradiol-17 beta had a greater increase in uterine weight than controls (216.7 and 202.5 vs. 165.3 g; P<0.01). None of the hormones implanted affected carcass weight significantly.
