The increasing food problem of sub-Saharan Africa: food production and food imports since the 1970s

The increasing food problem of sub-Saharan Africa: food production and food imports since the 1970s

Quarterly Journal of International Agriculture 24(2): 129-141

Analysis of agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa during 1961-81 indicates that the food situation deteriorated during the 1970s as a result of low levels of production, inadequate distribution and low purchasing power. Explanations of the deteriorating food problem focus on either specific changes during the 1970s, such as drought, or on factors of longer standing, such as the post-independence population explosion and government agricultural policies.
