The life cycle of the Armillaria mellea complex

Current research has indicated that A. mellea sensu stricto has a shortened life cycle, without a transitory dikaryotic phase in the subhymenium of the fruitbody found in nature. A. obscura, A. borealis, A. bulbosa and A. cepistipes var. pseudobulbosa have a 'complete' life cycle, although the fruitbodies of A. obscura and A. borealis which are produced easily in lab. conditions often show the shortened cycle.
