The making of Hanley Park

The making of Hanley Park

Landscape Design (162): 11-13

The National Garden Festival of Stoke on Trent, UK, has highlighted some of the problems of reclaiming derelict land for park use. However, nearby at Hanley Park the problem was being tackled in 1890. The park consisted of 32 ha of abandoned pit shafts, spoil heaps, a refuse tip, and was dissected by an operating canal. Part of the area was laid out as recreation grounds, and the remainder as a park which included a lake, formal terrace walks, bandstand and open air auditorium.
